Job Summary and Responsibilities

We are looking for a detail-oriented and technically proficient Design Engineer to support the planning and design of fiber optic (FTTH) and wireline networks. This role combines knowledge of telecommunications network architecture with advanced GIS capabilities to produce high-quality, data-driven designs. The ideal candidate will not only be fluent in using GIS tools like ArcGIS or QGIS but will also bring automation and scripting expertise to streamline data workflows and enhance design accuracy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and document fiber and wireline network layouts using GIS platforms (ArcGIS, QGIS), ensuring compliance with engineering standards and local regulations.
  • Perform spatial analysis and GIS-based calculations to support route planning, cost estimation, and build feasibility.
  • Develop and maintain automated workflows using Python and/or ModelBuilder to streamline data processing, quality control, and design validation.
  • Collaborate with network planners, field engineers, and construction teams to translate high-level plans into detailed, build-ready designs.
  • Integrate GIS data with other systems (e.g., CAD, ERP, or project management tools) to support cross-functional coordination.
  • Conduct quality assurance checks on design data, flagging inconsistencies and proposing corrective actions.
  • Maintain and update GIS databases with as-built and field-verified data to ensure ongoing accuracy and traceability.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related technical field.
  • Proven experience in fiber network design, preferably in FTTH or wireline deployments, with a strong foundation in GIS-based planning.
  • Advanced proficiency in GIS platforms such as ArcGIS and/or QGIS, including spatial analysis, geoprocessing, and data modeling.
  • Strong programming skills in Python for automating GIS workflows, performing data validation, and building custom tools; experience with ModelBuilder is a plus.
  • Familiarity with database management, spatial data formats, and integration of GIS with other enterprise systems.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, utility maps, and field survey data to produce accurate and build-ready network designs.
  • Excellent analytical thinking, attention to detail, and ability to work independently or collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with telecom-specific GIS tools or platforms (e.g., IQGeo, Vetro FiberMap, 3-GIS).
  • Experience with ArcGIS Online for publishing, sharing, and managing web maps and applications is a plus.
  • Knowledge of fiber architecture models (GPON, XGS-PON) and associated components.
  • Understanding of data integration between GIS and enterprise systems (e.g., Sitetracker, SAP, AutoCAD).
